Medvedev beats Ruusuvuori, advances to the third round of the Australian Open 2024
Third seeded Medvedev fought hard despite being first two sets down in his second round of the Australian Open. He was up against 53-ranked Finland opponent Emil Ruusuvuori. Medvedev won the game 3-6, 6-7, (1), 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-0 in 4 hours, 23 minutes.
The two players walked onto the Rod Laver Arena at 11:07 p.m. AEDT on Thursday night and the match ended at 3:39 a.m. on Friday. This happened after World No.3 Elina Rybakina lost the match against her opponent Anna Blinkova. This match had the longest tiebreak ever in a women’s Grand Slam event. 22-20.
The young player from Finland started well and had won the first two sets but after a medical timeout taken by Medvedev, Medvedev started his comeback. He broke Ruusuvuori serve and won the third and fourth set. It was all deuce in the next game and Ruusuvuori was two points from winning the game but Medvedev took a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker. That’s when Medvedev’s experience kicked in and Ruusuvuori’s legs started to pain. Medvedev went on to win the set 6-0 and eventually won the game.
For the first time ever, Australian Open organizers decided to start on a Sunday and before this no matches went past 2 a.m. Lat year at the Australian Open Andy Murray defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis at 4:05 a.m. in a second-round match that lasted 5 hours, 45 minutes.
In his post-match presentation Medvedev spoke his heart out to the spectators sitting in the Rod Laver Arena at 3:39 a.m.
He said, “Honestly guys, I would not be here.” “Thanks for staying. If I would be a tennis fan and I would come, at 1 a.m. I would be like, ok, let’s go home. We’re going to catch the end of the match on the TV.”
Coco Gauff advances to the fourth round of the Australian Open 2024 after winning in straight sets
Fourth seeded Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday after playing a flawless game against Alycia Parks. She won the match, 6-0,6-2.
She beat her opponent in almost 61 minutes and made a total of 8 unforced errors whereas her opponent made 34 unforced errors. Coco Gauff, the 19-year-old has now won 10 straight major matches and is tied with Serena Williams for the third longest streak by an American teenager.
Last year’s Australian Open champion, Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the fourth round with a 6-0, 6-0 destructive win over Lesia Tsurenko.
In the post-match presentation, Aryna Sabalenka, “Last year, Iga Swiatek won so many sets 6-0, and this is one of the goals, to try to get closer to her.”
This was Sabalenka’s first 6-0, 6-0 win in her career. This score was previously seen in Serena William’s win over Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarterfinal at the 2013 US Open.
Sabalenka will next play Amanda Anisimova who defeated Paula Badosa with a 7-5, 6-4 at this year’s Australian Open.
16-year-old Mirra Andreeva has had a remarkable Australian Open debut when she came from 5-1 down in the final set to beat Diane Parry 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
