IPL 2024 : 8 players to be retained from next season? IPL owners' meeting postponed to address the same

The meeting of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners has been postponed. The conference was supposed to take place in Ahmedabad on April 16, but numerous sources claim that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has notified the franchise owners that it has been postponed due to an alteration in the IPL schedule. Even though several franchises have been adamantly opposing raising the number of retentions, a new date has not been announced.

WHY is the meeting?

The purpose of the gathering was to plan how the IPL will proceed once the mega-auction takes place the next year. The BCCI's top brass sought to probe the owners' brains about the number of retentions that would be permitted and the magnitude of the player purse. There have been discussions about increasing the number of retentions from the current four and significantly expanding the player purse above the present maximum of Rs 100 crore.

However, some suggest that the retention should be limited to one and franchises should be given more Right To Match (RTM) alternatives, a process that will be based on market value and transparency. The concern has been that retention might lead to surrogate and covert payments to players.

The RTM system would enable franchisees to acquire their current players at a price established at the live auction. The risk that some teams will inflate a player's bidding price artificially so that the interested team will have to pay more is the drawback of the RTM method. However, they also run the danger of thereafter having to pay a higher price to acquire the player. While eight retentions have been discussed, some argue that there should only be one retention and seven RTM choices. Naturally, the BCCI has opinions about the best course of action, but it hasn't stated what it thinks.

The BCCI/IPL officials were to meet with franchise promoters on the sidelines of an IPL game in Ahmedabad between the Gujarat Titans and the Delhi Capitals. However, the BCCI has moved the Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Rajasthan Royals match at the Eden to April 16, postponing that match by one day. The re-jig was necessitated due to the Rama Navami celebrations in Kolkata, where local police cited security worries.
