The severe heatwave alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as the intense heat continues to grip northern India. Southern India, on the other hand, wll get a relief as the peninsular region is being drenched by cool rain showers.
Heat Waves in North India
Parts of northern India, including Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, are under a severe heatwave alert, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Between May 18 and 20, temperatures are predicted to soar to 45 degrees Celsius.
“There is no immediate chance of rain. Soon, there will be advection of hot air towards UP and Bihar also. Conditions will remain very hot for the next seven days,” said M Mohapatra, director general, IMD.
The IMD has declared an orange alert for Punjab, Haryana, and west Rajasthan.
According to the IMD, Rajasthan experienced the highest temperatures, with some areas reaching 46 degrees Celsius. Similar weather conditions were observed in many parts of Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, where temperatures recorded were 2-3 degrees above normal.
People are advised to take necessary precautionary measures against the heat, stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, wear lighted clothes and use sunscreen.

Rainfall 'Relief' in South India
As predicted, next week, areas like Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, south Karnataka, and coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds.
While the IMD has issued a “very heavy rainfall” alert for Tamil Nadu and Kerala till Monday, the other states including Goa and Maharashtra are likely to see moderate showers over these days.

Over the next week, considerable rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds are predicted across peninsular India due to a cyclonic circulation near Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and the surrounding southern areas. The same is predicted for Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and southern Karnataka.
On the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, and Rayalaseema, light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are also likely during this time.
Rainfall in Northeastern States: In the northeast, states like West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to experience light to moderate rain, with heavier downpours expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim on Sunday and Monday.
