With the President's assent, Women's Reservation Bill is now a law

The Women's Reservation Bill, which aims to reserve 33% of seats for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, has now become a law. This significant achievement was made possible with President Droupadi Murmu's assent, as announced by the law ministry in a notification issued on Friday. However, the implementation of this law will depend on the forthcoming census and the subsequent delimitation exercise, which entails redrawing Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies to allocate specific seats for women.

The law will be implemented on a date chosen by the central government and announced through an official notification in the Gazette. The president has given her approval to the bill, which was passed by Parliament last week, on Thursday. According to the notification, this legislation is officially known as the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act.

On the previous Thursday, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar graciously signed the Women's Reservation Bill, also referred to as the "Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam," in order to honour its endorsement by both Houses of Parliament. Consequently, it was subsequently sent to the president for her ultimate approval.

After receiving the president's approval, this bill, widely regarded as a significant step towards achieving gender equality, has now been enacted as the law of the nation. During a special session of Parliament on September 20, the bill was overwhelmingly passed by the Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha likewise endorsed it on September 21, marking the final day of the four-day session.

The law strongly supports the idea of reserving 33% or one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and the Delhi assembly. Furthermore, it also incorporates a provision for a specific quota within this already allocated quota for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Anglo-Indian women. This remarkable legislation is expected to have a substantial influence on enhancing the representation of women in the political sphere.
