In a devastating turn of events, 16 individuals lost their lives within a span of 24 hours in Himachal Pradesh due to severe rainfall. In the Solan district, a cloudburst led to the deaths of seven people, as their houses were washed away. The victims of this tragic incident were identified as Harnam (38), Kamal Kishore (35), Hemlata (34), Rahul (14), Neha (12), Golu (8), and Raksha (12). The state's Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has urged citizens to stay indoors, steer clear of rivers and drains, and avoid landslide-prone areas.
Landslide Claims Lives at Shiv Temple in Shimla: Death Toll Rises to 21
Simultaneously, another calamity unfolded in the Summer Hill area of Shimla city, where a landslide near a Shiv Temple claimed the lives of nine individuals. This tragedy raised the death toll to 21 over the past two days. The authorities are working diligently to clear debris and rescue any potential survivors.
Appeals for Caution and Assistance
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has extended his condolences to the grieving families and has directed all possible support to be provided to those affected. He has stressed the importance of avoiding risky areas and has requested tourists to refrain from visiting the state during this crisis.
Educational Institutions Closed, Ongoing Exams Canceled
As a precautionary measure, all educational institutions in the state have been shut down due to heavy rains. Ongoing examinations for Post Graduate classes, including B Ed exams, scheduled for August 14, have been cancelled. The Chief Minister has communicated with District Collectors to assess the extent of damage and ensure appropriate responses.
Monsoon's Toll and Meteorological Insights
The ongoing heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh are attributed to a fresh bout of Western Disturbance. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the South-westerly Arabian Sea monsoonal winds are striking the Himalayan foothills due to the current location of the Monsoon trough.
Monetary Loss and Infrastructure Impact
Himachal Pradesh has borne the brunt of these floods and landslides, suffering a staggering financial loss of ₹7,020.28 crore. The monsoon season, which began on June 24, has led to 257 deaths, with landslides, flash floods, road accidents, and other factors contributing to the toll.
Infrastructure Disruption and Restoration Efforts
The havoc wreaked by the monsoon has resulted in significant infrastructure damage. The state has witnessed 90 landslides and 55 flash flood incidents, leading to the closure of nearly 450 roads, including 2 National Highways. Additionally, 1,814 electricity supply schemes and 59 water supply schemes remain disrupted, further emphasizing the challenges faced in the aftermath of these natural disasters.
