It is a dream for many to work at a Big Tech company like Google, Microsoft, Meta or Apple. But many don’t understand how to prepare themselves for a shot at a job in one of these companies and sometimes it may be hard to figure out what qualities the companies are looking for in their potential employees. Well, if you too aspire to be there someday and need help in this department, we have an answer for you.
The CEO of Apple, Tim Cook in his recent visit to an Italian University where he came for the commencement ceremony, expressed his views and said that any company’s success depends on its culture and the employees. Furthermore, he added that there are four main qualities that Apple looks for in candidates who come for an interview to work at Apple.
And they are – Collaboration, Creativity, Curiosity, and Expertise.
Collaboration – Working collaboratively with all colleagues is the key to the company’s success and is responsible for its advancement.
Tim said, “We believe that strong individual contributors are really key, but two strong individuals that work together can do amazing work, and small teams can do incredible things. So we look for the ability to collaborate with people—the fundamental feeling that if I share my idea with you, that idea will grow and get bigger and be better.”
Creativity – Any company big or small wants their employees to be creative so that they create ideas that help the organization to grow.
“We look for people that think differently, that can look at a problem and not be caught up in the dogma of how that problem has always been viewed,” he told students. “And so [we look for] somebody that will kind of walk around the problem and look at it from different angles and use their creative juices to come up with solutions,” Tim added.
Curiosity – Curiosity is the key to learning. If you are curious about anything you will end up understanding everything about it.
“Curiosity is about being curious about something to ask lots of questions, whether you think they’re smart questions or dumb questions,” the Apple CEO said, adding that the company looks for people with innate curiosity. “It’s amazing when somebody starts to ask questions as a kid would, how it puts pressure on the person to think through the answers deeply. And so, we look for this innate curiosity in people.” Cook said.
Expertise – If you are a skilled person it can surely help the organization in some way or another and that’s the reason for adding expertise to the list of qualities that Apple looks after in candidates.
“If we’re doing something in industrial design, we need somebody that knows industrial design and has a skill set in it either from their college days or through their work days,” he said.
Mr Cook also added “We have a group of people in the company that really want to change the world, that wants to enrich people’s lives, that want to leave the world better than they found it,” he said, as quoted by Fortune. “It’s that kind of feeling that drives people to do their best work and I’ve seen it happen again and again, and the results are just unbelievable.”
So, if you are also looking for a job at Apple or in such companies it’s high time to develop these qualities and get better for the job, and if you already have all these qualities, Best of luck Buddy. Go for it!!!
