In a recent development, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has issued relocation notices to over 2,000 employees, mandating their presence at assigned work locations within a tight 15-day timeframe. This directive has surfaced through revelations by the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), a prominent IT labour union advocating for employee rights.
Shift in TCS Work Policy:
The issuance of relocation orders aligns with TCS's revamped work policy, mandating a five-day office work week for employees. This alteration has triggered a wave of discontent, with approximately 180 employees voicing concerns over the abruptness of the notice and the absence of consultations. The sudden shift has created significant personal and familial disruptions for affected individuals.
NITES Advocacy and Response:
Stepping forward on behalf of the aggrieved employees, NITES has taken proactive measures by engaging with the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The union has levelled allegations against TCS, citing unethical transfer practices and has called for an impartial investigation into the matter.
TCS's Perspective:
In contrast, a TCS executive, preferring anonymity, asserted that such relocations are customary, and often linked to project assignments. This holds particularly true for freshers who undergo training in diverse locations. However, TCS has refrained from formal responses or addressing queries pertaining to these allegations.
Reports indicate that employees failing to comply with the relocation directives have faced repercussions, including email access revocation and threats of salary withholding and job termination. Notably, those who have already relocated, especially those who moved to Mumbai, have encountered a lack of work assignments, intensifying unrest among the workforce.
TCS's Hybrid Work Model and Managerial Influence:
Despite affirmations that the hybrid work model remains prevalent, instances have emerged where managers have encouraged increased office attendance among employees, deviating from the hybrid model's flexibility.
The unfolding scenario raises concerns over employee welfare, ethical work practices, and transparency within TCS, prompting ongoing discussions and inquiries into the company's recent directives and policies.
