NASA Internship

STEM and Miscellaneous

The Office of STEM Engagement at NASA enrols more than 2,000 students each year, providing paid internships for high school and college-level students. These programs enable participants to collaborate with leading professionals and contribute to groundbreaking projects, irrespective of their educational background.

Moreover, NASA offers internships across a range of fields beyond engineering, such as finance, IT, and project management. Applicants are encouraged to visit NASA's official internship programs webpage to explore available positions and match them with their academic majors and career aspirations.

As per NASA’s official site, NASA's some requirements for interns before applying for internship:

1. Seek mentorship: Pair up with a mentor to maximise your internship experience. Look beyond your industry for mentors and take the initiative to reach out.

2. Conduct research: Familiarise yourself with NASA's history, mission, and ongoing projects before applying. Research the specific center you're interested in for a potential interview.

3. Network: Build a professional network to open doors for future opportunities. Start by connecting with alumni from your school, especially those working at NASA.

4. Gain experience: While prior work experience isn't mandatory, it's beneficial. Seek internships or part-time jobs to enhance your skills and make your application more competitive. Additionally, engage in research or volunteer projects to bolster your resume.

Can International students Apply?

Nasa internships predominantly cater to US citizens due to federal regulations and security protocols linked to many projects.

However, Non-US citizens, including international students can apply via

  1. Visiting Student Research Program (VSRP): it is offered by some Nasa centres, which allows international students to engage in research activities. Eligibility criteria and application procedures vary, so interested individuals should directly contact their preferred Nasa centre or consult its website for details.
  2. Collaboration: Nasa collaborates with universities, research institutions, and space agencies globally, occasionally providing internship or research opportunities for international students. Interested candidates should explore partnerships between their institution and Nasa or other relevant space-related organisations.
  3. Nasa's Pathways program: it primarily targets US citizens, certain federal agencies or Nasa contractors may offer opportunities for non-US citizens but this is extremely limited, happens only a few times. These opportunities usually necessitate that the student has the legal authorization to work in the US.
