Is Hustle Culture Good for Your Career?

Hustle. Grind. Innovate. These are the buzzwords of our time. But at what cost? Are we sacrificing our well-being in pursuit of success?

The constant pressure to work more, do more, and achieve more is taking a toll on our physical and mental health. It's time to take a step back and re-evaluate our priorities.

But do we really know what hustle culture is?

It's all about working harder, faster, and stronger to achieve success. But the thing is, this culture can be a bit too much at times. It's like everyone's trying to one-up each other by talking about how little they sleep or how many hours they work. And let's be real, that's not something to be proud of!

It's gotten so bad that many people, especially entrepreneurs, feel pressured to adopt these habits just to keep up. But here's the thing, it's not healthy! Hustle culture can lead to burnout, which is basically feeling super exhausted and overwhelmed to the point where you can't function. And nobody wants that!

This toxic culture puts the body in a state of fight or flight. With constant stress, the body releases the stress hormone cortisol in higher amounts and for more prolonged periods. To normalize these elevated cortisol levels, the body must enter a state of rest. However, hustle culture doesn't allow time for rest, which can lead to burnout. Prolonged elevated cortisol levels are associated with various detrimental effects, including anxiety, depression, heart disease, memory impairments, and more.

Rather than idolizing hustle culture, and do this instead in a world full of distractions and addiction to hustling there is merit in taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture. Here are some helpful tips on what to do if you're stuck in the hustle culture:

1. Start with awareness: Become aware of whether you're in a cycle of hustle culture. This awareness is the foundation for change and progression.

2. Acknowledge what's important to you: Clarify your goals and write them down. Take a moment to think about whether your intentions fulfil your why.

3. Give your mind time to wander: Take mindful micro-breaks throughout your workday to feel more balanced and protect yourself from burnout.

4. Work hard and rest hard: Rather than treating self-care as a commodity that must be earned, deal with self-love and compassion. Take a mental health day when you need it. Regain control by realizing that our true power is not to do more but to do better. To be better, we must be able to think creatively, forge new paths, innovate, and inspire, all of which are impossible if we hustle ourselves into burnout.

So remember!!!

Hustle's in the air, but don't despair. Balance is the key, so you can be rare!
