Google's parent company, Alphabet, has reportedly shut down its experimental department, everyday robots, which was working on developing and training robots to perform various tasks, including cleaning Google's cafeterias. As part of Alphabet's cost-cutting measures amidst widespread layoffs in the tech industry, the decision to discontinue the robotics project was made.
Although the robots had shown promise and were useful, they were deemed too expensive to maintain, with each one estimated to cost tens of thousands of dollars. Despite the cancellation of everyday robots, some of the technology and team members will be integrated into Google Research's existing robotics efforts.
