Wine Heist: Couple arrested for stealing 1.6 million euros worth wine

After a nine-month hunt border guards were finally able to get hold of the couple who stole 1.6 million euros worth of wine.

In October 2021, a couple identified as Tatiana and Estanislao used a fake passport to check into Restaurante Atrio - a Michelin-starred restaurant in Cáceres. That night the couple had a 14-course dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant followed by a tour of the wine cellar. After the dinner is when the couple had decided to strike.

A few hours after midnight Tatiana, with the intention of distracting the only present night staff, ordered a salad. As the staff was obliging to Tatiana's request, Estanislao went and stole the wine cellar's electronic key. But Estanislao failed in his task as he grabbed the wrong key, which led to Tatiana ordering a desert to buy Estanislao more time to get the master key.

They used this master key to unlock the wine cellar and steal 45 bottles of wine. They stuffed the bottles inside their backpacks with towels in them to stop the bottles from breaking.

The most expensive of the stolen bottles was a vintage 19th century wine, priced at about 350,000 euros.

The couple has now been arrested and have been fined 750,000 euros worth in damages.

Estanislao has also been sentenced for 4 and a half years in prison for aggravated robbery and Tatiana has been sentenced for 4 years as well.
