The United Kingdom government is planning to designate the Russian mercenary group Wagner as a "terrorist" organization. A draft order will be presented in parliament to allow Wagner's assets to be categorised as "terrorist" property and seized. This designation will make it illegal for anyone in the UK to be a member of the group or support it.
The decision to proscribe Wagner under the Terrorism Act 2000 was made due to the organisation's activities and the threat it poses to British nationals abroad. Home Secretary Suella Braverman described Wagner as a "violent and destructive" group and a "threat to global security. The UK has already imposed sanctions on Wagner and its senior commanders over alleged human rights abuses.
The move to designate Wagner as a terrorist organisation comes after pressure from the opposition Labour Party. Wagner has played a significant role in Russia's war in Ukraine and has been active in several African countries and Syria. Its chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was killed in a plane crash in August.
Wagner troops have reportedly been sent to Belarus, and their future role in Ukraine remains uncertain. The UK government's decision to proscribe Wagner as a terrorist organisation aims to make it clear that they are terrorists and to serve the Kremlin's political goals.
