Tragic Shooting in Rotterdam Claims Three Lives; Suspect Identified as 32-Year-Old University Student

A tragic incident occurred in Rotterdam on Thursday when a 32-year-old university student claimed the lives of three people. The attacker first targeted a 39-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter at their home. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, the girl passed away from her severe injuries at the hospital.

After this horrifying act, the attacker burned down the woman's house and took her to the University Hospital of the Rotterdam Medical Center. There, he burst into a classroom and shot and killed a 43-year-old teacher. Police quickly arrested the attacker near the hospital grounds, where he also set the fire. The motive for this shocking incident is still unclear.

Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, emphasizing its profound impact on the community. He sent his sincere condolences to the victims and their families. Chief prosecutor Hugo Hillenaar revealed that the suspect has a criminal record and was convicted of animal cruelty in 2021.

Disturbing videos circulating online depict tense moments as police guided students, some wearing medical scrubs, to safety off campus. Heavily armed arrest teams were quickly on the scene. One video shows a person in handcuffs and wearing combat gear. Helicopters hovered overhead, while police snipers took up strategic positions on the roof of the hospital.

Authorities confirmed there was no trace of the second perpetrator. The tragic event echoes previous examples of violence in the Netherlands, including the 2019 Utrecht tram shooting and the 2011 Tristan van der Vlis shopping centre rampage, which shocked the nation down to the bone marrow.
