Three people on board a tourist plane were killed when it crashed on Saturday in a mountainous, wooded area of western Switzerland, according to police. The little vacationer plane crashed in a lofty and forested region close to Ponts-De-Martel in the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel at around 10.20 am (0820 GMT), provincial police said. The Neuchâtel police issued a statement that stated, "The pilot and the two passengers died on site," but did not provide any additional information regarding the victims.
For a sightseeing flight, the plane, which was registered in Switzerland, had taken off from the nearby Chaux-de-Fonds airport. According to police, a significant rescue and recovery effort had begun, and the extremely steep terrain at the crash site in the Neuchâtel mountains made the work more difficult. The statement said that the crash's cause is still unknown and that authorities had started an investigation to find out what happened.
