A Nobel Prize is awarded to those who, during the preceding year have contributed the greatest to help humankind in various ways with categories ranging from physics, chemistry, and physiology to medicine, literature, and peace. The prize was named after the Swedish chemist “Alfred Nobel” who was best known for his invention of dynamite. Each Nobel Prize awardee receives a gold medal, a diploma, and a Monetary award.
The Nobel Prize medals, minted by Myntverket in Sweden and the Mint of Norway are registered trademarks of the Nobel Foundation since 1902. Each medal has an image of Alfred Nobel in the left profile on the obverse. Nobel laureates receive a diploma directly from the King of Sweden. Each diploma is uniquely designed by the prize-awarding institutions. The diploma contains a picture with the name of the laureate and a citation explaining their achievements. The Nobel laureate is awarded a certain sum of money at the ceremony which may differ from year to year based on funding available from the Nobel Foundation. For example, in 2009 the total cash awarded was 10 million SEK (US$1.4 million), but in 2012 following the Great Recession, the amount was 8 million Swedish Kronor, or US$1.1 million.
The Nobel prize is a celebration of excellence. Alfred Nobel created a trust and mapped out directions to use the money in the trust. He created five prizes to honour men and women for their outstanding achievements.
The Nobel Prize was awarded in year 1901 for the first time, and since then has been awarded every year to some of the most distinguished human beings in varied fields. Unlike the other awards, the Nobel Prize is not awarded posthumously but can be awarded if the death of the awardee has occurred after the announcement of the Nobel Prize. Many Indians too such as Shri Rabindranath Tagore, Shri Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman, Shri Kailash Satyarthi have been recipients of this grand Award.
