The last king of Greece, Constantine, dies at 82

  • The last king of Greece, Constantine II, has died at the age of 82. He died late Tuesday in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Athens, as per reports citing hospital staff.
  • In 1964, amid a difficult time in Greek history that ended in a military coup three years later, Constantine was crowned king.After a counter-coup failed, he was soon compelled to leave the country.
  • Constantine, a keen sailor,won gold medal in a team event at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. But as a result of his involvement in  Greece's democratic government in 1965, which ultimately resulted in military rule, his popularity immediately began to decline.
  • A year later, a referendum by the national unity government on abolishing the monarchy shattered all hopes of Constantine would rule again.
  • On Wednesday,the Greek government decided that he would be buried as a private citizen in the grounds of the family`s former summer palace at Tatoi
