Thailand's Cabinet Embraces Equality: Same-Sex Marriage Bill Approved

The same-sex marriage proposal was accepted by Thailand's Cabinet on Tuesday, and the final draft will likely be presented to Parliament the following month.

The words "men and women" and "husband and wife" will be changed to "individuals" and "marriage partners" in the Civil and Commercial Code amendment, according to deputy government spokesperson Karom Polpornklang, allowing same-sex couples to enjoy the same rights as heterosexual couples.

He added that the next step would be an update to the pension fund law to recognize same-sex couples as well. He stated that the law will ensure the right to form a family in a relationship between same-sex couples.

Reporters were informed by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin that the draft law is anticipated to be presented to Parliament on December 12. With the support of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and the Parliament, same-sex marriage will be legalized in Thailand, putting it in third place in Asia behind Nepal and Taiwan.

Despite its reputation as an LGBTQ+ welcoming nation, Thailand has had difficulty enacting laws pertaining to marriage equality. The previous year, the Parliament discussed a number of legislation changes that would allow either civil unions or marriage equality, which do not provide same-sex couples the same privileges as heterosexual couples. Before the previous government's parliamentary session concluded, none of the bills had been passed.

Following its election campaign pledge, the Pheu Thai party, which formed the new government in August, resurrected the effort to enact a marriage equality bill.
