Strong Earthquake of 7.4 Magnitude Hits Alaska Peninsula, Triggers Tsunami Warning

The Alaska Peninsula region was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on Sunday. Following the earthquake, a tsunami alert was sent out by the US tsunami warning system. According to USGS, the earthquake was at a depth of 9.3 km (5.78 miles).

"Notable quake, preliminary info: M 7.4 - 106 km S of Sand Point, Alaska."

The USGS updated the earthquake's magnitude from an initial reading of 7.4 and the depth from an initial report of 9.3 km to 32.6 km (20.3). According to USGS, the earthquake occurred at 10:48 pm on Saturday around 55 miles (89 km) southwest of the small town of Sand Point.
