At least 13 people, including seven kids, have died in a stampede at a stadium in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. The event happened outside the Barea stadium's entrance, where some 50,000 people had gathered to watch the Indian Ocean Island Games' opening ceremony. The Red Cross has warned that the death toll may increase despite the fact that the stampede's source is still unknown.
The numbers have since been corrected, although the prime minister initially stated that 12 people had died and 80 had been hurt. This tragedy is not the first to occur at the Barea stadium; a concert-related catastrophe there in 2019 that left 16 people dead and countless others injured was a similar incident. Three individuals were killed and about 100 people were hurt when a homemade bomb exploded at the same stadium in 2016 during Independence Day celebrations. The multidisciplinary Indian Ocean Island Games are being held in Madagascar through September 3. In order to remember the victims, President Andry Rajoelina, who was present at the opening ceremony, has called for a minute of silence. To avoid similar tragedies in the future, the incident has once again emphasised the need for stronger safety procedures at stadiums in Madagascar.
