Russia/Ukraine - 35 missing after dam collapse leads to flood

The Kakhovka Hydroelectric power plant, which is located on the southern bank of the Kherson region was blown up due to unidentified reasons on June 6th. This ultimately led to a massive flood, causing disastrous effects on the villages and agricultural lands in its radius. Following this incident, about 35 civilians went missing in southern Ukraine on Sunday, 11.06.2023. According to satellite video footage, the dam breach was still not clear.

There are speculations about Russia being involved in this tragic incident, but there is no clear verdict as yet. The images also suggest that the condition of the reservoir has been deteriorating for a long time, and this might have eventually caused the outburst. Thousands of people surrounding northern Ukraine were immediately displaced to rescue camps, safe from the flood.The Ukrainian Interior Minister said that around 77 towns and villages have succumbed to the flood and 35 civilians are missing which includes 7 children.5 people have died in this tragic incident, in the region of Mykolaiv. A total of 3,700 people were evacuated from the flood-hit ones from the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.

Ukraine’s deputy foreign Minister said, “This is the worst environmental catastrophe since Chernobyl  so we are investigating not only a war crime but also an ecocide”
