Road Safety Crisis Claims 20 Miners Lives in South Africa

A horrific road accident in South Africa has claimed the lives of more than 20 employees of mining giant De Beers,  local authorities confirmed on Sunday. A transport official in the northern province of Limpopo said a bus carrying employees from the Venetia mine, one of the country's largest diamond mines, collided with a truck.

Vongani Chauke, recounting the incident, said that the bus collided with a truck. This tragic event occurred at about 16:00 GMT, about 25 km from the mine, in the village of Musina, near the Zimbabwe border. Unfortunately, the exact cause of the accident has not been discovered.

Despite having one of the most advanced road networks on the continent, South Africa still struggles with one of the worst road safety records. The Venetia mine, located near the border of Botswana and Zimbabwe, has been under the capable management of the De Beers Group for more than three decades. This important mine contributes more than 40% of the country's annual diamond output, creating jobs for more than 4,300 people, a significant portion of whom are residents.

In July, De Beers achieved a major milestone when it began underground diamond production, complementing its existing open-pit mining operations. This recent tragedy recalls an earlier disaster in Limpopo province, where a head-on collision between a bus and a money truck killed 20 people and injured dozens.
