The government of Nepal is currently developing a regulation that would require such a chip beginning in the spring of this year, when the Everest climbing season begins and the window of opportunity to reach exceptionally high elevations opens.

Why Rescue Chips are made Mandatory

"Mt. Everest, also known as Sagarmatha in Nepali, is a popular destination for thousands of climbers from all over the world, including India and Nepal. It stands at 8,849 meters (29,032 feet) in elevation. According to Nepali officials, "while many people successfully reach the summit, some tragically lose their lives or suffer serious injuries during the climb."

300 climbers of Mount everest have died since 1953, according to government statistics from Nepal.

The Everest base camp is situated at an altitude of 18,000 feet. Snow storms, avalanches, and other harsh weather conditions make any search and rescue operations from the base camp to the summit difficult.

The Department of Tourism's Director, Rakesh Gurung, told PTI that all climbers going to Everest will receive an electronic chip from the government for a charge. It will fit into the jacket of the climber."

About the Rescue chip

The chip provides real-time with the climber's location to aid in emergency rescues, even in the most extreme circumstances. The chips will be attached to the climber's jacket.

Gurung estimated that the chips will cost between $10 and $15. He continued, "The chip will enhance safety during expeditions and facilitate emergency rescue operations."

According to Gurung, some reputable climbing organizations have already given their climbers the electronic chips.
