Today, Oct 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing. In the midst of the strife in the Middle East and the Ukraine, the two leaders are striving to strengthen their "no-limits" alliance.
Putin will be hosted by Xi at the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Summit alongside dozens of other world leaders to commemorate ten years since the Chinese President commenced the infrastructure initiative aimed at bolstering connections with Asian, African, and Latin American countries.
As US President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Israel today, the two leaders are likely to concentrate on their remarks regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict during their meeting.
The permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia and China, have stated that the injustice towards the Palestinian people is the main issue driving the conflict.
Additionally, Russia has criticised violence against both Jews and Palestinians, but Putin has consistently condemned the US for what he sees as its flawed strategy.
Putin's last trip to China was for the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022, just days before the Russian president deployed tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine. At the time, China and Russia announced a "no-limits" partnership.
With a focus on high-tech initiatives like digital finance and e-commerce platforms rather than expensive projects like dams, Xi wants to smaller and greener the Belt and Road. The goal, according to analysts, is to support a bigger movement for a multipolar world order that allows the global south more autonomy rather than one that is dominated by Washington and its allies.
