Over the weekend, widespread protests erupted against the planned restructuring of the judiciary by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in Israel and New York City. The PM's visit to the US to attend the annual UN conference, where he laid the groundwork for a "new Middle East," met with a surge in protests.
For the 38th week running, Israeli protesters gathered on Saturday, September 23, to express their outrage over Netanyahu's 'assault on democracy.' About 2,000 protesters gathered in New York to voice their opposition to Netanyahu's alleged "campaign of deceit."
A major protest group Kaplan Force said, “We will not allow Netanyahu to turn Israel into a dangerous messianic dictatorship, taking us to a constitutional crisis. The protests will be amplified over the coming weeks until the Knesset’s return from holidays.”
Pro-Netanyahu protests also occurred
According to one of the Times of Israel's stories, numerous conservative groups also descended upon New York to demonstrate their support for the Netanyahu administration.
They chanted "64 mandates," referring to the coalition's majority in the 120-seat Knesset, and "their money will not help you."
Netanyahu and his supporters contend that foreign funding is driving the anti-government protests, but they have not yet offered any proof.
“We very much support democracy and the Israelis elected democratically Bibi Netanyahu, so sorry that these people are upset that they lost but a democracy is a democracy,” Netanyahu supporter Hillary Barr was quoted as saying by Times of Israel.
