Protests in France as President Macron pushes through pension reform

French citizens took to the streets across the nation in protest against President Emmanuel Macron’s government on March 16. The people are protesting against the contentious pension reform that the Macron government is pushing through parliament. The pension reform will raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.

France Protests

The Macron government used its special powers to pass the pension bill through parliament without a vote on March 16 which could be due to the lack of a majority for the new bill. The move sparked protestors to gather in front of the French Parliament in central Paris. The riot police used batons, water cannons and tear gas to gain control over the protestors. Different worker unions across France have been protesting the pension bill since January 2023.
