Priyanka Chopra Discusses Mansplaining, Abortion Laws With Kamala Harris

The Democratic National Committee Women’s Leadership recently invited Priyanka Chopra to interview Kamala Harris on 30 September. There was a lot of discussion about her looks and the discussion in the interview. The issues which both of them touched upon during this interview have come to the fore for the first time. Both of them spoke openly about their Indian relationship, marriage equality, and climate change.

Priyanka said during the interview, "In my home country of India, women have held the highest elected positions of power, from tri-selected Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1966 to the current President, Droupadi Murmu. It is baffling to me that in this country, this land of opportunity and revolution, we have not seen that final ceiling shattered yet." Priyanka Chopra said this in a room full of prominent Democrats invited to that convention. Priyanka said, "You’re the daughter of American origin of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father. Whereas I’m an Indian whose parents are Physicians and I’m a recent-born immigrant to this country, which still fully believes in the American Dream."

57-year-old Harris was born in Oakland, California. Her mother Shyamala Gopalan went to America from Tamil Nadu in India, while her father Donald J Harris came to America from Jamaica. She’s the first woman, the first black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected as the Vice President of the United States.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas said America is considered a ray of hope, freedom and choice for the whole world. She noted that after working for over 20 years, she hadn’t received equal remuneration as her male co-stars until this year. Harris too was an equal match for Priyanka's gumption. In her remarks, Ms Harris acknowledged that right now they are living in an unsettled world.  “I've been travelling around the world as Vice President. I've directly talked with 100 world leaders in person or by phone,” she said, adding “things that we long took for granted are now up for debate and question”.

“You look, for example, at Russia's unprovoked war in Ukraine. We thought it was pretty well settled--the issue of territorial integrity and sovereignty -- and now that is up for some debate, given what's happening there,” Ms Harris said. She also spoke about the overturning of the Roe V. Wade decision that provided women with a constitutional right to abortion stating, “We thought a woman's right--a constitutional right--to make decisions about her own body was settled. No longer."

Of course, Priyanka opened up her sassy side with a touch around mansplaining - She started the session with a jab at men patronising women and then pointed to the silence in the room saying, "Do you hear that sound? That is the sound of no mansplaining, ladies."
