A sweater famously worn by Princess Diana, known as the 'black sheep' jumper, achieved a selling price of nearly 10 crore rupees in a remarkable auction event at Sotheby's Fashion Icons auction in New York, highlighting Princess Diana's enduring fashion legacy.
Lady Diana Spencer first wore this iconic red wool jumper, adorned with white sheep and a lone black sheep, at a polo match during her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981. The sweater, designed by the label Warm and Wonderful, became an instant hit due to Princess Diana's fashion influence.
After being missing for years, the sweater was discovered in an attic, covered in dust. Upon Buckingham Palace's request, it was sent back to the label for repairs, and a replacement was provided. Although the original design was discontinued in 1994, it resurfaced in 2020 through a collaboration with Rowing Blazer.
Emma Corrin, known for her portrayal of Diana in 'The Crown,' also wore a replica of this iconic sweater. Sotheby's Fashion Icons auction exceeded all expectations, with the sweater selling for almost ten times its estimated value. This sale not only marks the highest amount ever paid for a sweater but also stands as the largest sale of an item associated with the late royal.
Sotheby’s global head of fashion and accessories, Cynthia Houlton, aptly described this garment as "exceptional," emphasizing its ability to carry "the whispers of Princess Diana’s grace, charm, and her keen eye for fashion." This auction outcome once again highlights the enduring influence of Princess Diana on the world of fashion and popular culture, leaving an indelible mark.
