President Droupadi Murmu was given the Grand Order of the Chain of Yellow Star, Suriname's highest civilian honor, on Monday. She is the first Indian to get this honour. Chandrikapersad Santokhi, President of the Republic of Suriname, presented the award to the Indian President.
After receiving the award, Murmu stated that it holds the tremendous significance for both her and the Indian people.
In the tweet, the President of India, stated, "I am greatly honored to receive Suriname's highest distinction, ‘Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star.’ This recognition holds tremendous significance, not only for me but also for the 1.4 billion people of India whom I represent".
she further stated, "I also dedicate this honor to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a stellar role in enriching the fraternal ties between our two countries."
President Murmu arrived in Suriname's capital city of Paramaribo on June 4 as part of her state visit to Serbia and Suriname.
President Murmu started her day of engagements earlier today by meeting with President Santokhi at the Presidential Palace in Paramaribo.
At the Presidential House in Paramaribo, she was greeted warmly by her counterpart Santokhi.
Throughout the sessions, the President was grateful for President Santokhi's warmth and hospitality. She was pleased to discover that Suriname has a large Hindi-speaking population, which makes her think of India. On Monday, four significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between India and Suriname in the areas of capacity building, agriculture, and health.
