British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak rejected Yousaf's request for a second referendum on Scottish independence just hours after it became known that Humza Yousaf would be the new leader of the Scottish National Party. Sunak, on the other hand, stated that he is "excited to work" with Yousaf.
Politicians in Scotland and throughout the United Kingdom are expected to "focus on the issues that matter most to them: addressing backlogs in hospitals, addressing the cost of living, and lowering inflation, he told reporters.
On Monday, March 27, Humza Yousaf, a politician of South Asian descent, was selected to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as head of the Scottish National Party (SNP). Yousaf (32) received 52% of the votes cast by SNP members.
Even though Yousaf is on track to become the new first minister of Scotland, he will not officially assume the position until MSPs vote on it on March 28.
Yousaf declared that he would launch a new campaign for Scottish independence after he was elected leader of the Scottish National Party.
He declared in Edinburgh following the outcome, "The people of Scotland need independence now more than ever before, and we will be the generation that delivers it."
He stated, "I was determined then, as I am now, as the 14th leader of this great party, that we will deliver independence for Scotland together as a team," pointing out that Scotland is a country in Europe.
In 2014, the issue of Scottish independence was the subject of the previous referendum. The final results showed that a small majority of people had voted to stay in the UK.
The issue of autonomy reemerged unequivocally after Brexit, with Scotland pioneers communicating wish for the country to remain in the European Association.
