According to a report in the New York Post, a passenger on an Air Canada flight jumped off the plane before takeoff for Dubai. On January 8, the passenger "boarded the aircraft normally" at Toronto Pearson International Airport, but he later opened the cabin door rather than taking a seat.
Following the event, he suffered injuries after falling 20 feet to the tarmac. Other emergency agencies were sent to the area, along with the Peel Regional Police. The Boeing 747's takeoff was delayed by over six hours, according to the Air Canada website, while crew members responded to the passenger and investigated the matter.
A representative from the airline told Global News that an inquiry is ongoing and that "all our approved boarding and cabin operating procedures were followed." The Greater Toronto Airports Authority's awareness of the odd incident was also confirmed by an official from the organization. "We worked with the airline, Peel Regional Police, and Peel EMS to provide support and to determine the immediate needs," said a spokesperson. The severity of his injuries is unknown. It is still unclear if the passenger's disruptive behavior resulted in an arrest.
Consecutive Attack Scare on Air Canada
Meanwhile, on an Air Canada aircraft a few days prior, a 16-year-old passenger attacked a family member. Due to the exceptional circumstances, there was a significant diversion and a three-hour wait for the passengers.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police released a press release stating that Air Canada Flight 137 was traveling from Toronto to Calgary at the time of the incident. According to authorities, the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport received notification of an aircraft diversion to Winnipeg at 12:20 p.m. local time due to "an unruly passenger on board who had assaulted a passenger."
The 16-year-old was allegedly restrained by other passengers and airline employees, per the authorities. Additionally, they said that the adolescent was taken into custody and taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation and that the family member was treated for "minor physical injuries" sustained during the journey. There have been no additional reports of injuries, and the attack's motivation is still unknown.
