At least 31 people have died and seven are still missing after a ferry caught fire in the southern Philippines. The fire broke out on the MV Lady Mary Joy 3 and lasted for eight hours, causing many of the approximately 250 passengers and crew to jump into the sea to escape. Over 200 people were rescued by the coast guard, navy, nearby ferry, and local fishermen. The burned ferry was later towed to the shore of Basilan, a southern island province, where the bodies of 18 victims were found in a budget section of the passenger cabin. Governor Jim Hataman stated that these individuals died due to the fire and that there may have been more people on board who were not listed on the manifest. Search and rescue operations for the missing passengers are ongoing.
