North Korea and South Korea are two countries on the Korean Peninsula in East Asia.

North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a single-party communist state that has been ruled by the Kim dynasty since its foundation in 1948.

South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea (ROK), is a multiparty democracy that has a market-based economy and a long history of cultural and economic exchange with other countries.

The Korean Peninsula was divided into two countries at the end of World War II, with the Soviet Union occupying the northern part of the peninsula and the United States occupying the southern part.

In 1950, the Korean War broke out between the two sides, and a ceasefire was eventually signed in 1953. However, no formal peace treaty was ever signed, and the Korean Peninsula remains technically at war to this day.

Despite this, there have been some efforts towards reconciliation and cooperation between North and South Korea in recent years.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in

In 2018, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a historic summit in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) separating the two countries, and they have continued to meet and discuss issues of mutual concern.

However, relations between the two Koreas remain complex and sensitive, and there are still many challenges to overcome in order to achieve lasting peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.
