North Korea fires more Ballistic missiles as US flies Bombers over South Korea

North Korea has fired four short-range ballistic missiles toward the North’s western sea, the South Korean military has reported. On Saturday, November 5, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of staff said that the missiles flew around 130 Kilometres (80 miles) toward North’s western sea. The missiles were fired by the North during the duelling display of the military where the U.S. also fired two supersonic bombers over its neighbour, South Korea.

The North has test-fired more than 30 missiles this week, which included an intercontinental ballistic missile on Thursday that triggered evacuation alerts in northern Japan and flew a large number of warplanes inside its territory which was an angry reaction to a massive combined aerial exercise between the United States of America and South Korea.

As per the South Korean Military, two B-1B bombers trained with four U.S. F-16 fighter jets during the last day of the “Vigilant Storm” joined the air force drills that wrapped up on Saturday. For the first time since December 2017, the bombers have been deployed over the Korean Peninsula. This exercise involved 240 warplanes which also included advanced F-35 fighter planes from both countries.

According to North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, the country’s military action was described as an appropriate response to the Vigilant Storm referring to this exercise as "an aggressive and provocative military drill targeting" North Korea and said that both the participants, the United States and South Korea would "pay the most horrible price in history" if these drills continued.

They said that North Korea will respond with the “toughest counteraction” to any attempts by the “hostile forces” to infringe on its sovereignty or security interests.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff has justified the participation of the B-1Bs in the joint drills calling it an able demonstration of the allies' readiness to "sternly respond" to North Korean provocations. He also said that this shows the U.S. commitment to defend its ally with any and every military capability within its power, nuclear or otherwise.

B-1Bs are described by the US Air Force as "the backbone of America's long-range bomber force" that can strike anywhere in the world. Such fly-overs have been done in the past as well around North Korea with the idea of being the U.S. show of force to the Korean Peninsular nation.
