According to state media on Thursday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un replaced the military's top general while calling for more war preparations, higher production of weapons, and expanded military drills.
The general staff chief, Pak Su-il, had been dismissed, according to the news agency KCNA, but no additional details were given. Ri is the defense minister, but it is not clear whether he would continue in that post.
Kim's actions came to light during a meeting of his party's central military commission not long after he visited a weapons factory where he demanded the production of more artillery, missile engines, and other weaponry.
According to the report, he also asked for more military exercises to effectively use the latest weaponry and equipment and to keep troops in a combat-ready posture at all times.
The conference addressed plans for a militia parade that North Korea will hold on September 9 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the republic's foundation, according to the KCNA report.
