Bad news for those planning to replicate the Jeffrey Dahmer look this Halloween! eBay, the one e-commerce site that had listings selling the dreaded, notorious, pedophilic, cannibalistic serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer's lookalike costumes is now busy removing it.
Though he committed his murders from the late '70s to the early '90s, Netflix's true crime series DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story recently brought the killer back to the forefront of public knowledge. Unfortunately, it also brought him to the top of some Halloween costume idea lists. eBay pulled the serial murderer-inspired costumes for violating policies against listings that "glorify violence or violent acts."
The serial killer's looks in the Netflix series have become hugely popular now that the show is rated one of the top-most shows on the OTT platform worldwide spurring ideas that those looking to mimic the gore, can pick up some of those gory 70's looks straight off the online shopping spaces.
In an email sent to Gizmodo on Thursday, an eBay representative confirmed the ban. According to eBay, the Dahmer costumes are against the site's policy on listings that "glorify violence or violent crimes, or are affiliated with those who are infamous for perpetrating violent acts." Additionally, users are not allowed to sell products that "assist" violent criminals or media that shows or professes to show instances of rape, execution, or the dismemberment of corpses. In other words, it seems as though the rule was created specifically for Dahmer memorabilia.
Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer a.k.a Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster was an American serial killer and sex offender who committed the murder and dismemberment of seventeen young men between 1978 and 1991. Many of his later murders involved the gruesome acts of necrophilia, cannibalism, and the constant preservation of carcass parts generally all or a few parts of the body.
In September, Netflix premiered the series Monster, which features American Horror Story actor Evan Peters as the titular character. Although the Netflix series has been a huge success, it has also come under fire, with pleas to "not glamourise Jeffrey Dahmer" but rather to honour the victims.
As a result of the popularity of Netflix's "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," some Halloween enthusiasts have planned to dress up as the serial killer this season. They've also indicated sporting an orange jumpsuit and a pair of the wide-set aviator glasses that became the serial killer's trademark. Although many internet users have expressed their displeasure on social media, the Jeffrey Dahmer-inspired Halloween costume idea has not gone down well with numerous netizens. They have pleaded with Halloween devotees not to celebrate the holiday in Jeffrey Dahmer's memory and to instead think of the victims' families and their trauma.
In an interview with TMZ for a story that was published on Sunday, Shirley Hughes, the mother of Tony Hughes, one of the victims Dahmer killed, discussed Halloween costumes. According to TMZ, she claimed that "Dahmer was pure evil" and questioned how people who prefer to look like him can get any sleep. TikToker Mallory Lee Richardson asked people not to dress up as Jeffrey Dahmer for Halloween because she believed it was offensive. Mallory Lee Richardson also stated that anyone who was thinking about aping Jeffrey Dahmer should first put themselves in the position of the relatives of the victims. Also, Nancy Grace, the host of Fox Nation's Crime Stories, who loves Halloween, stated, she was adamantly opposed to the idea of Jeffrey Dahmer-inspired costumes.
Those who are unable to celebrate Halloween without donning a Dahmer costume this season will perhaps need to look for their creepy aviator spectacles elsewhere 'cos the legit platforms ain't selling it.
