The memories of COVID-19 are still alive, and nobody wants to relive them. But if sources are to be believed, a new global health emergency is gripping China again and can spread its tentacles worldwide. Claims of a novel hMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) that is behind a surge in cremations are renewing fears in the minds of the public. It's particularly preying on children, causing symptoms like cough, fever, and breathing difficulties that are escalating into bronchitis and pneumonia. So it's high time to get acquainted with the reality of this possible 'epidemic.'
Is Human Metapneumovirus Really a Novel Virus?
Human Metapneumovirus is not a new strain, but the extent of its spread is what is taking everyone by surprise. Nor does this virus have roots in China. In 2001, van den Hoogen first reported it in respiratory patients from The Netherlands. Serological studies followed soon after, which documented the virus's existence for at least 50 years. Eventually, the virus was known to be a major cause of acute respiratory illness in children and adults throughout the world.
What Is Behind the Current Outbreak of HMPV?
HMPV is a respiratory virus that spikes in colder months, particularly between November and the end of February. HMPV spreads in droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. However, during summer, the droplets released from coughing or sneezing are relatively bigger than in winter. So, they fall to the ground. In winter, the droplets hang onto the air and spread among people. When they strike someone with a weak immunity, such as children, they become sick.
Is HMPV Another COVID-19?
At the outset, you may equate HMPV with COVID-19 because of similar symptoms and rapid spread. The strict measures to wear masks and the apparent declaration of a state of emergency are other factors that increase fear associated with this virus.
However, HMPV has been around for years. Along with influenza and Mycoplasma pneumonia, it has been contributing to the cases of infections but has not been the sole cause of a surge in sickness.
Videos show overwhelmed hospitals and crematoriums, but there is no surety that the cases are because of HMPV. Children and young adults are bound to catch respiratory infections through HMPV and other viruses if they have weak immunity. If the symptoms are neglected for long or the virus catches a person with underlying medical conditions, the result is fatal. This is because the symptoms do not take much time to progress into chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and pneumonia.
Another cause of the outburst is the full-scale social interaction after almost five years. Now that the COVID-19 fear is in the rearview, people are venturing out, which increases the chances of catching infections.
What Should You Do If Struck by HMPV?
HMPV lasts for 10 days with symptoms like runny nose, sore throat, cough, and breathing problems. There is no specific treatment to shorten the course of the illness, but fever medications, adequate hydration, and proper rest will help you. If the signs do not improve, it's best to call a doctor. This is more true if you have a compromised immune system or a chronic medical condition.
What Is China Doing to Curb HMPV Spread?
Health officials in China have begun a pilot system to monitor the spread of the HMPV virus. This initiative, which contrasts significantly from when the COVID-19 broke, is meant to enhance the nation's preparedness. In addition, the public has been asked to wear masks, not go in crowded places, and maintain distance from potentially infected people. Also, to prevent unwanted fear and rumours, the Chinese government has not verified the state of emergency.
