Men and women between 18 and 35 must serve in the military for two years under the People's Military Service Law. Myanmar's military says the law will be enforced. The junta opposes this because their 2021 coup worsened the country. The junta's defence ministry will shortly provide crucial regulations, procedures, announcements, orders, notices, and directions for implementing the plan. The law takes effect on February 10, 2024.
Conscription law in Myanmar
An earlier junta drafted the contentious law in 2010, but it wasn't implemented until lately. During a state of emergency, military service terms may be extended for a maximum of five years in compliance with its criteria, and individuals who defy a summons may spend the same amount of time in prison. The military junta that seized power in 2021 declared a state of emergency, which is still in effect today. The army just extended it for an additional six months. This action has sparked intense criticism because it both establishes the junta's authority and raises questions about possible power abuse and human rights violations.
The junta's imposition of mandatory military service has added another level of complexity to the already complex political environment of Myanmar, which is still reeling from ongoing turbulence highlighted by pro-democracy protests that have turned into violent resistance. With concern for the effects these changes may have on the people of Myanmar and their fight for democratic governance, the international community is keeping a close eye on these events.
