Tensions had escalated to an alarming degree in the aftermath of the Israeli airstrike that had tragically destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, resulting in the loss of numerous lives, including high-ranking Iranian military personnel on 1st April'24. The targeted attack on a diplomatic mission had been condemned as an unprecedented act by Iran's leadership, who had vowed to respond with equal severity and force.
Among the casualties were Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the elite Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), and his deputy, General Haji Rahimi. Additionally, Brigadier General Hossein Amirollah, the chief of general staff for the Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon, had also been reported as one of the victims. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had confirmed that at least 11 individuals had lost their lives in the devastating strike.
Iran's ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, had issued a stern warning, stating that Iran's response would match the magnitude and harshness of the attack. This escalation had come amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah along the Israeli-Lebanese border, following the October 7 attack by Hamas and the recent resurgence of violent attacks by Iranian-backed militias targeting US and Israeli positions in Iraq.
