Mass Catcalling is a ritual with this Spanish all-male college

Students of an all-male college in Spain have done something which has sparked outrage not only in Spain but even around the world as the videos are now going viral. The residents of the college can be seen pulling up their blinds and hurling abuses, making animal noises directed towards a nearby women’s residence of Santa MÃnicay in Madrid. The ritual seems to be choreographed as more than 100 males of Elías Ahuja college open out their windows all at once and scream coordinated abuse in the direction of the female college nearby.

One of the young men started the night-time mass catcalling ritual, chanting, "Wh**es, come out of your burrows like rabbits. You're f**king nymphomaniacs. I promise you'll all f**k in the bullfight! Go, Ahuja!".

"Go, Ahuja!" was the indication for the blinds in dozens of apartments to be pulled up, revealing the silhouette of scores of other men. The sound of howling, chanting, and making animal noises aimed at the occupants of the Santa Mónica all-female, next-door building is then heard next.

Spanish news outlet El Público reported this is not the first time that students at Elías Ahuja have staged such an event. This catcalling act is treated as a tradition at the beginning of the school year and students in the past have also been filmed singing songs while using Nazi salutes.

Spain Catcalling

Just after the video was posted, people from all around Spain as well as the world condemned such an act. Spanish politicians also criticized such behaviour of the students, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described it as "macho, inexplicable, unjustified," asking the students to immediately call an end to such “sexist behaviour”. He also added, “It’s especially painful to see the protagonists are young people."

It has been mentioned by a Spanish news portal that the alleged students who performed the catcalling have already been evicted. After all this, the college also released a public statement on Wednesday calling the behaviour “ unacceptable, incomprehensible and inadmissible in the society.” The college also said that they will apologize publicly for the shameful event and also make sure that students body attend mandatory gender equality lessons.

The incident was a clear indication of the demand for education on sexual consent, said Spain’s Equality Minister, Irene Montero. Sexual education would help young people "learn about the culture of consent so that we can stop reinforcing the culture of rape and sexual terror that makes women into sexual objects", the Minister said.

In August, the Spanish government passed legislation, known as the “only yes means yes” bill aimed at ensuring that any sexual intercourse that takes place in Spain without clear consent can now be prosecuted as rape.
