Italy boat tragedy: Smugglers threw kids into sea to lighten the boat

While the dead toll from the Italian boat catastrophe keeps mounting, a horrific aspect of the tragedy has come to light.

There are rumours that the smugglers responsible for the "voyage of death" forced youngsters into the water to lighten the load on the boat. These claims have been made by those who survived the tragedy on Sunday.

80 of the 170 passengers died in the incident, according to the Taliban-run foreign ministry in Afghanistan. The casualties allegedly include 14 children. The local Italian provincial administration reports that the toll is 65. It is projected that the sum will rise. On the boat that brought undocumented immigrants from Turkey to Italy, each passenger made a substantial payment of €8,000 (£7,000).

According to Reuters, police have detained three smugglers: a Turkish national and two citizens of Pakistan. According to a story on ITV, a second Turkish suspect is thought to have perished in the collision.
The migrants, including children, were allegedly thrown out into the water by the traffickers as the boat started to sink close to the Calabrian coastal town of Crotone. This was allegedly done to lessen the load on the boat.
