Denmark marked its first year of no bank robberies in 2022, with criminals now turning to online fraud instead. According to data from Finance Denmark, an industry group for lenders, the Nordic country saw a single bank robbery in 2021, down from 222 two decades ago. Increased surveillance, better alarm systems and stronger cooperation with the police have helped to bring the number down.
Bank robberies have occurred in Denmark, as in any country, but they are relatively rare and are taken very seriously by law enforcement. In the past few decades, there have been a handful of high-profile bank robberies in Denmark, including:
The Norrebro Bank Robbery: In 1982, a group of six young men robbed a branch of the Norrebro Bank in Copenhagen, making off around $1.5 million in today's money. They were eventually caught and sentenced to prison.
The Aalborg Bank Robbery: In 1994, a group of four men robbed a branch of the Aalborg Bank in Aalborg, making off with the equivalent of around $1.5 million in today's money. They were eventually caught and sentenced to prison.
The Jyske Bank Robbery: In 2002, a group of four men robbed a branch of Jyske Bank in Aarhus, making off around $500,000 in today's money. They were eventually caught and sentenced to prison.
The Danske Bank Robbery: In 2010, a lone gunman robbed a branch of Danske Bank in Aalborg, making off around $200,000 in today's money. He was caught and sentenced to prison.
The Danish Crime Prevention Council tells The Local that Danes need to be aware of security measures, including ensuring that doors and windows are locked and that alarm systems are in place.
