Is Elon Musk Starting His Own Political Party? Here’s Why He’s Furious with Trump’s $5 Trillion Bill

As the U.S. Senate races to vote on President Donald Trump’s ambitious second-term legislation — the so-called "One Big, Beautiful Bill" — Elon Musk has emerged as one of its most vocal and vehement critics. The tech billionaire, once a key ally and advisor to Trump, is now threatening to launch a new political force — the "America Party" — if the bill is passed.

Calling the legislation a reckless and historic fiscal misstep, Musk has not only denounced the bill itself but has also lashed out at Republican lawmakers, accusing them of betraying the very principles they claim to uphold.

From Trump Ally to Fierce Opponent: Musk Slams 'One Big, Beautiful Bill'

Elon Musk, who once held a close advisory role in the Trump administration as the head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, has taken a hard stand against the President’s proposed bill. Nicknamed the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” the legislation includes massive increases in defense, energy, and border security spending — while implementing deep cuts to essential healthcare and nutrition programs.

What has drawn Musk's particular ire is the bill’s unprecedented $5 trillion increase to the national debt ceiling — the largest in U.S. history. In a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk declared,

“It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS that we live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY!! Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people.”

The Senate is currently pushing through a marathon voting session to pass the bill before a self-imposed July 4 deadline. Although it narrowly passed in the House last month, any amendments made in the Senate would require the House to vote again before the bill reaches Trump’s desk for final approval.

According to projections from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the legislation would add approximately $3.3 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.

‘Debt Slavery Bill’: Musk Takes Aim at GOP Hypocrisy

Musk didn’t limit his critique to the bill’s economic implications. He went further, attacking Republican lawmakers — especially those aligned with the Freedom Caucus — for what he called a “shameful betrayal” of conservative principles.

“How can you call yourself the Freedom Caucus if you vote for a DEBT SLAVERY bill with the biggest debt ceiling increase in history?” he asked, directly naming Rep. Andy Harris, Chair of the House Freedom Caucus.

In another post, Musk issued a stark warning to politicians who campaigned on promises of fiscal discipline only to support what he views as runaway spending:

“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame! And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

Musk has made it clear that, if the bill passes, he intends to act on his threat of forming a new political entity.

“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”

Political Fallout: From Trusted Insider to Outspoken Rival

The deteriorating relationship between Musk and Trump marks a dramatic turn in U.S. political dynamics. Just months ago, Musk was viewed as a close Trump confidant. His appointment to lead the Department of Government Efficiency — a role that came with a ceremonial “key to the White House” — signified Trump’s deep trust in him.

Musk himself claimed a major role in securing Trump’s re-election. On June 5, he posted:

“Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.”

However, tensions soon boiled over. Musk began publicly criticizing Trump’s economic strategies, culminating in his blistering opposition to the spending bill. On June 11, in a moment of reflection, Musk appeared to backtrack slightly, saying:

“I regret some of my posts about President Trump last week. They went too far.”

He also deleted several controversial posts, including one endorsing Trump’s impeachment and another that linked Trump to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump initially fired back, calling Musk “disrespectful” and hinting at “serious consequences.” But in a surprise turn, the President later softened his tone. Speaking to Fox News on June 30, he referred to Musk as:

“A wonderful guy… a smart guy who campaigned with me.”

The Birth of the ‘America Party’?

While Elon Musk’s threat to form the "America Party" could be seen as political theatre, the billionaire’s influence — both financial and cultural — makes it a credible disruption in the U.S. political landscape. Musk has reportedly contributed over $250 million to political campaigns in recent years, primarily backing Trump-aligned causes.

With growing dissatisfaction among Americans over the current two-party system, Musk’s call for an alternative could resonate with voters across ideological lines.

His central message — that the U.S. has become a “uniparty” where Democrats and Republicans are indistinguishable in their pursuit of unchecked spending — taps into a deeply held frustration among many Americans. If the bill passes, Musk’s promise to create a new party could set the stage for one of the most radical political shifts in modern U.S. history.

A Nation at a Fiscal Crossroads

As lawmakers inch closer to finalizing Trump’s multi-trillion-dollar spending bill, Elon Musk is drawing a hard line. What began as an alliance rooted in innovation and reform has quickly soured into a high-stakes political rivalry. Musk’s blistering critiques, relentless social media commentary, and promise of a new political party underscore a growing divide not just between him and Trump, but between public expectations and political actions.

With the July 4 deadline looming, the outcome of the bill — and Musk’s next move — could have far-reaching implications for the future of American politics.
