In Iran, bombs went off in a crowd on Wednesday as people gathered to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the death of Revolutionary Guards general Qasem Soleimani in a US strike, killing more than 100 people. Soleimani's city is Kerman, where the twin explosions happened. According to state media, at least 103 people were killed and 211 were hurt.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, claimed that the perpetrators of the attack were "evil and criminal enemies" who would face harsh retaliation. Although state media and local authorities called the explosions a "terrorist attack," they made people even more worried about rising tensions in the Middle East because of conflicts like the recent killing of a top Hamas leader in Lebanon and the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
15 minutes of strikes at the Martyrs Cemetery at the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque shook global markets. Oil rose by more than 3%. After a 2020 US drone strike killed Soleimani in Baghdad, people gathered to honour him. He demanded a national day of mourning and labelled the act "heinous." Sources say remote-controlled concealed bombs caused the blasts, which is unsettling. People trying to leave caused chaos.
International leaders and governments, including the European Union, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iraq, and Jordan, spoke out against the killings because they were so terrible. Brussels called the bombings a "shocking toll of civilian deaths and injuries." Putin, on the other hand, sent his sympathies and called the event "cruelty and cynicism."
Following times of stress between Iran and its enemies, including Israel, these bombings are the deadliest attack on Iran since the 1978 arson attack on the Cinema Rex in Abadan. During the ongoing conflict, Iran has been fighting jihadist groups and apparently stopping plots by Islamic State-affiliated groups and operations allegedly linked to Israel's intelligence service.
Regarded as a hero in Iran for his part in fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, Qasem Soleimani played a major role in Iranian politics and military policy throughout the Middle East. By increasing long-lasting tensions between Iran and the US, his death in the US strike changed the dynamics and balances of power in the area.
