The Indian Navy is set to open a New ‘Strategically Crucial’ naval base INS Jatayu on Minicoy Island, scheduled for March 6. According to the Navy's statement, the upcoming inauguration of the new base will transform an existing small detachment into an "independent naval unit."
This initiative is part of the government's gradual efforts to enhance military presence and security infrastructure in the region. Minicoy, situated in the southernmost part of the Lakshadweep archipelago, holds strategic importance in the Arabian Sea, serving as a key point along vital sea lines of communication (SLOCs).
INS Jatayu will be the second naval base in Lakshadweep, following INS Dweeprakshak in Kavaratti. Its primary goal is to enhance operational surveillance, extend reach, and ensure sustenance capabilities in the region.
As per the Press Release, “The base will enhance the operational reach and facilitate the Indian Navy’s operational effort towards Anti-Piracy and Anti-Narcotics Operations in the Western Arabian Sea.”
It added, "It will also augment the Indian Navy’s capability as the first responder in the region and augment connectivity with the mainland. The establishment of a Naval base is in line with the Government of India’s focus towards the comprehensive development of islands.”
The establishment of INS Jatayu coincides with plans to develop a dual-use airfield at Minicoy, further strengthening the Navy's position in the region. Converting the temporary setup into a fully operational naval base underscores the Navy's dedication to leveraging India's geographical advantage to advance maritime interests.
Naval Base- Strategically Significant? Maldives, China?
The Indian Navy has increased its presence in the Indian Ocean nation of Lakshadweep amid rising tensions with the Maldives following the election of pro-China president Mohamed Muizzu who vowed to withdraw Indian forces from the country. The base will be approximately 258 kilometres (160 miles) closer to the Maldives.
Mr Muizzu has asked India to recall 89 security personnel to operate reconnaissance aircraft in the Maldives. The first group is expected to leave by March 10, while the remaining personnel are expected to leave within the next two months.
India is cautious about China's growing presence in the island nation, which is strategically located along major east-west international maritime shipping routes. According to a statement released by the Navy on Saturday, the new base will enhance New Delhi's "operational surveillance" of the area.
Also, The Indian Navy’s presence in the Maldives comes at a time when the Indian Ocean region is facing increasing challenges, including China’s growing presence and the reemergence of piracy. The Navy has increased surveillance measures and deployed task groups accordingly.
