Innocent thrills turn tragedy: Reno Air races stunned by fatal crash

On Sunday, September 17, a tragic plane crash occurred outside  Reno-Stead Airport in Nevada, ending the region's tourism event. This unfortunate incident occurred just one month after the Reno Air Races were cancelled due to safety concerns. The accident claimed the lives of two experienced pilots, Nick Macy and Chris Rushing. Fortunately, no civilians were injured.

The Reno Air Racing Association quickly provided updates on Facebook, emphasizing its commitment to safety. They are actively working with the National Transportation Safety Board, the FAA and local authorities to determine the cause of the accident. Their main goal is to ensure the health of drivers, spectators and volunteers during this difficult time.

A live stream captured the incident, revealing the shock and fear of viewers who witnessed the accident. Several months earlier, the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board of Directors made the difficult decision to suspend the event for safety reasons, even after a pilot died in a crash last year. It was originally planned to mark the 60th anniversary of the event with an air show. However, this decision was also influenced by economic considerations when insurance costs increased to 1.3 million USD.

RARA CEO Tony Logoteta expressed the organization's deep attachment to this location. They have said very publicly that they hope to stay here forever but sometimes things change and things don't go exactly as planned or hoped.
