Imran Khan, a former Pakistani prime minister, has been detained and given a three-year prison term in the Toshakhana case. Allegations in the case centre on Khan allegedly making money via the sale of pricey state gifts while he was in office. Khan was given a prison sentence as well as a five-year ban on active political involvement.
At his Lahore residence, Islamabad police detained Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. He was sent to Islamabad from Lahore and is likely to be transferred to Kot Lakhpat Prison. Khan's legal team has refuted all accusations of impropriety and intends to immediately appeal the court's ruling.
In the Toshakhana case, it is alleged that Khan exploited his position as premier to obtain and resell gifts that were in the state's custody and were valued at more than Rs 140 million. The gifts come from international travel. Khan was previously disqualified from standing for office in the same case by the Pakistani Election Commission for making erroneous claims and declarations.
After Khan was taken into custody, a significant police presence was put in place outside of his home, and the road was closed. PTI employees have protested the arrest in the streets. The PTI party intends to appeal the judge's decision to the high court after labelling it biassed. On the other hand, Nawaz Sharif's party, the PMLN, has charged Khan with taking gifts from Toshakhana and selling them on the underground market.
The arrest of Khan occurs three months before an election that is anticipated. Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, has suggested that the legislature be dissolved on August 9 in order to facilitate general elections by November.
In the Toshakhana case, it is alleged that Khan abused his position as premier to acquire and resell presents worth more than Rs 140 million that were in the custody of the state. The presents came from trips overseas. For making false claims and inaccurate declarations, Khan was earlier disqualified from running for office by the Pakistani Election Commission in the same case.
Khan's detention in May provoked countrywide demonstrations and unrest all over the nation. Shortly later, he was granted bail and released. Khan is accused of terrorism, violence, blasphemy, corruption, and murder in over 140 instances across the nation. He was removed from office in April of last year after losing a vote of no-confidence that he said was part of a US-led plot to assassinate him for making independent foreign policy judgements.
