Ian Hogarth, a technology entrepreneur, will lead a new commission created by the British government to examine the safety hazards posed by artificial intelligence, it was announced on Sunday.
Britain will hold a symposium on AI hazards later this year, and last week, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promoted London as a potential worldwide hub for the regulation of the technology.
To advance cutting-edge safety research in the lead-up to that summit, Hogarth, who co-founded the concert discovery site SongKick, which was sold to Warner Music in 2017, has been appointed to chair the UK's AI Foundation Model Taskforce.
"The Prime Minister has laid out a bold vision for the UK to supercharge the field of AI safety, one that until now has been under-resourced even as AI capabilities have accelerated," Hogarth said in a statement.
"I'm honored to have the chance to chair such an important mission in the lead-up to the first global summit on AI Safety in the UK."
The task force, which will examine the hazards associated with AI and conduct safety studies, was established with an initial 100 million pound ($128.17 million) commitment from the government in April. Additionally, it will aid in the creation of global defenses like infrastructure and standards for safety and security.
"The more artificial intelligence progresses, the greater the opportunities are to grow our economy and deliver better public services," Sunak said in the statement.
"But with such potential to transform our future, we owe it to our children and our grandchildren to ensure AI develops safely and responsibly."
