German magazine makes cartoon on India's population, people not happy

A cartoon released by the German magazine Der Spiegel has caused outrage among Indians due to its alleged racial undertones, as it portrays India's population surpassing China's. The cartoon depicts a crowded train with individuals seated atop it, holding the Indian tricolour flag while a Chinese bullet train is visible in the background on a different track. The image seems to emphasize China's technological progress while portraying India's infrastructure as crumbling.

Indians have condemned the cartoon, with Kanchan Gupta, a senior advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, labelling it as racist. He stated, "Dear Germany, this cartoon is extremely racist. Der Spiegel's depiction of India bears no resemblance to reality. The aim is to belittle India and appease China. This is just as bad, if not worse than the racist caricature in the New York Times ridiculing India's successful Mars mission."In response to the cartoon, numerous Indians highlighted that the portrayal of Indians travelling on the roofs of trains is not only inaccurate but also carries racist connotations.
