France Constitution Committee approves plan to raise retirement age to 64 in France

The French Constitutional Council approved a controversial plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 on Friday, giving President Emmanuel Macron a triumph after three months of protests over the law, which negatively impacted his leadership. The decision threatened to infuriate unions and other opponents of the pension system, including protesters who gathered at locations across France on Friday night when the decision was announced.

Some of the other proposals in the pension law were rejected by the council, but the primary focus of Macron's plan and the primary concern of protesters was the proposal to raise the retirement age. Macron can enact the bill in 15 days or less. Thousands of protesters gathered outside Paris city hall and marched through the city centre, while hundreds erupted in other cities.
