After numerous delays, Finland's largest and most advanced nuclear reactor, Olkiluoto 3, began regular operations, according to its operator on Sunday, only hours after Germany terminated its nuclear era. According to TVO, the site's operator, Olkiluoto 3 is anticipated to continue operating for "at least the next 60 years" and is currently responsible for producing 14% of the nation's electricity. The commencement of the European pressurized water reactor (EPR), which is already more than 12 years behind schedule, was originally scheduled for December but was postponed multiple times during the testing phase.
The reactor, which was developed by the Areva-Siemens partnership under French leadership, was first turned on in December 2021 and connected to the Finnish electricity system in March 2022.
Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid stated on Sunday, that nuclear energy accounted for more than 50% of all electricity generated in Finland. Olkiluoto 3, the most potent nuclear reactor in Europe with a 1,600 megawatt generating capacity, achieved full power in late September for the first time since construction began in 2005.
TVO said, "Test production has been completed and regular electricity production started today, From now on, about 30 percent of Finnish electricity is produced in Olkiluoto," which already had two reactors.
